Amtrak: Clock is ticking for 110-year-old Hudson River rail tunnels
NYS Governor Andrew Cuomo touring Amtrak's North River Tunnels under the Hudson River into Penn Station on December 19, 2018. The Gateway Program would build two new tunnels under the Hudson River, allowing the existing tunnels to be closed and rebuilt. "The study by Amtrak, reviewed by The Associated Press, pinpoints a litany of problems in the 110-year-old tunnel, many stemming from saltwater inundation from Superstorm Sandy eight years ago. Impetus for the effort grew over the last four years as a funding impasse between local officials and President Donald Trump's administration stalled a project to build a new tunnel."
